Melancholy Deal ((open)) Extreme_deal_by_erosaf-d5u5lhh

He had been very lonely of late while Michael went to find and save Russian Roulette. If it was one thing Extreme Deal had learnt, it was that out here, other, than Russian Roulette, he had no one to talk to. He was no warrior, and he had already learnt that other stallions were likely to try and use that against him. It was not something he was overly pleased about either.

Losing Roulette like this was not something he was overly proud of. He knew he needed more help here, and mares were one thing he needed. Another was a safe home. And that was something he was unsure how to find. He gave a small neigh, wondering if anyone was interested in him. He was a former tame horse afterall.

Melancholy Deal ((open)) Horse_74_by_sooty_bunnie-d34vkg9

What was this place? Fascination crept over her features as she stood looking out at some driftwood playing at the edges of a bank. Wide brown eyes empowered her to take a few steps forward, imploring the waters that had perked her curiosities as she had first arrived. Unlike the others, who had been more keen on finding shelter and a home, she was simply more interested in what was around her. Why not stop and smell the roses, as the elders had always told her to do? Now, she had all the time in the world.

Lean and thin was her form, covered in muscle beneath the thin earth hued pelt that was constantly getting bitten by the flies. Their breed didn't stand well in the heat, it seemed, and it would only be a matter of time before she was eaten alive by these horrible insects!

Lucky was hardly used to this kind of life style - back at the stables they were sprayed down to keep the insects off of their forms. She wasn't complaining though, to anyone - at all. She was just overjoyed that she was free of the stable that had kept her for so long.

Hearing a neigh in the distance that sounded friendly, the young filly loped slowly to where the sound originated from. There was a lonely gray stallion there - wait! She thought she had seen him at the track once for the stocky horse racing after her maiden debut. "Hello," she said softly, breathing hard from the run as she came to a stop before him. Lucky was tall, but this stag was wider than here - clearly more powerful. But I am faster she thought with a grin.

"I am Lucky Dollar....have I seen you before?" she asked, confused by his familiar appearance.

The great stallion snorted in surprise at the brown mare that was coming out into his sight now. It could only be one of the Thoroughbred racehorses once who he had talked to a lot. Those who once had been friends of his too, before he was retired from the racetrack.

Not to mention he felt ever so sure that he knew the mare before him from that place. But could it really be who he thought she was? If so, what on earth was she doing out here? He had not expected Russian Roulette to show up, much less one of these flashy Thoroughbreds who hated the heat so much.

At the name she gave him though, he shorted again, completely surprised it was her! “Don’t you remember me? It’s me, Extreme Deal!” He was ever so pleased to see an old friend of his. “I can certainly remember you, Lucky Dollar. I watched you race many time while I was waiting for my own races to happen.”

The grey stallion smiled as he spoke, still unable to believe that she really was here, and not a mirage. He could smell her, and hear her, and see her so she was no mirage, he knew that much. “Though I must ask, what on earth are you doing out here… in the wild… where there are no humans to look after you?” He knew he could be asked the same, but did he care? Hell no!

His brown eyes sparkled with amusement as he spoke, he was clearly feeling a bit better with an old friend to talk to. That said, she was no Roulette, but for the moment, that certainly did not matter. He had another friend again, and that was something that pleased him greatly. “Are there others who came this way?”

It was a small world, entirely too small for her particular liking. When she came here, she hadn't expected to see those from her previous life; not even had she expected her stable mates to tag along as she ventured into the wide, open world. It was not an unpleasant surprise that she saw the Quarter Horse stallion here, though, for she knew that they were on good enough terms that he would not lead the humans to their group. Only a few times had she and the storm hued stallion spoke, and when they had, it had been of petty things; such as who would win race six or the aptitude of the track. Both of them were excellent at what they did - professionals.

And now they were meeting, in a totally unprofessional setting as friends instead of racers. As she came closer, she knew who he was certainly, for she had seen him in warm up and racing a few times. Of course, he raced different distances than she and against different horses, but his competition was obviously challenging as well.

How surprising! she thought as he spoke his name. It was a wonder that so many race horses had been arriving to this same land all at once. It was so far away from the land of humans that she wondered how they had all ventured here. "Ah, yes!" she said, perking her harks in recognition. "I remember you. You ran in the Quarter Horse series races. A champion, at that," she said with a smile, used to watching the stockier horses run after the thinner ones.

"I came with some friends, other esteemed racers. Rock Hard Ten, Well Done Glue Gun, and even September Rain, the champion mile filly who broke down last fall," she said, thinking of Rain's tragic breakdown that cost her the career she had worked so hard for. It was very sad, but the reason she had left was of her own. Laughing she replied to him. "I personally decided to leave after being undefeated in three starts...because in my fourth, I got a second place. And the stable hands at Green Acres were beating me on a daily basis. That's no way to treat a million dollar winning horse..." she said, a little hurt that her stable hand would do that to her.

He was surprised to say the least to hear who had come with her. They were all names he knew though not September Rain. He had left the track before her time, and he knew it now. "The only one of those I do not know would have to be September Rain. I fear it is because I had to leave the racetrack behind before she started to compete. What a pity.”

Deal shook his head as he thought about the old days. They were the days he had always cared about, even if the chatter at the race track had always been about the upcoming races. “One other Quarter Horse I know came here. Do you remember a mare known as Russian Roulette?”

He thought for a few moments. “I never wanted to retire from the racetrack. Unfortunately, someone tried to take my sire, Extreme Occasion out while he was racing and succeeded, and my owner, thinking I might be threatened, retired me from racing. He sent me out to a ranch to live, saying he would come get me one day so I could return. It never happened and I escaped, as I did not like things there. All the humans saw me for was a sire for their horses, and I never wanted to be forced to breed with someone.”

He sighed.

There had been so many to compete against, and with each victory the chances of slaughter decreased. With each winning stride, the crowd would cheer more and more, and when one crossed the finish line, it was the most proud moment of their life. Even so excellent as they were, they were expected to reproduce with a stag that was 'the best' as well. There was no love involved, just mating to make a new prospect.

"Yes, I understand. She is quite young, but none the less, left a true champion of running a mile. I was a mile and a fourth horse, more suited to long distance," she said, pitying that she had to leave her life of luxury. It was a little less luxurious though when she was beaten on before the races - during the races, even when she was running with all the heart she had. And was winning with all the heart she had. Some jockeys. Didn't they know what a hand ride was? That was how some great race horses had broken down, due to being pushed past their limits.

She shrugged. It wasn't that she wanted to stop racing either, but the grooms were far too mean for her tastes. If she ever did get injured, it would be horrible on the road to recovery - at least she spent time with the jockeys while she was training. "I understand. I do, in fact, remember seeing a mare by that name once. She seemed like she had a lot of heart for racing," she said, knowing that the time she saw the mare run, she didn't win, but it was obvious she had put all of her heart into her racing.

“She never did manage to win no, but I know she did the best she could. Hell I even talked to her a few times to try and help her out a bit. Though I know she appreciated the help, it never helped her actually win in those races.”

He shook his head. “I certainly did not like any of the mares that I was forced to breed with. There was only one Quarter Horse amongst those I had to deal with, and neither she nor the filly which came from us were any good, even Roulette put those two to shame and that’s certainly saying something.”

He sighed. “Sometimes I do not believe humans understand the way we work do they? We’re expected to run the way they want, and I’ve seen more than one horse having to fight themselves in a race trying to obey their jockey. If only they had let us run the way we would normally, without a rider or any of that restricting tack.”

Things could have been different for so many horses that were considered duds on the track and he knew it. The whole way the sport was run was ridiculous. “I mean you don’t see anyone forcing those… greyhounds to run a particular way. Why not us as well?"
