Dismally Golden ((Phantom)) Empty
PostSubject: Dismally Golden ((Phantom))   Dismally Golden ((Phantom)) EmptySat Dec 29 2012, 03:13

A young mare wandered through the leafy undergrowth of the forest. She was frightened, and afraid of what might come out at her. It did not help that she could not see anything that was to her right; all she could really rely on was her sense of smell and her hearing. She sighed as she walked, before stumbling over a log that she had not seen until it was too late.

Wincing, the mare got back up onto her long pale legs; she was very frightened, and paused at the sound of a twig snapping behind her. Immediately, she backed up against a tree, not wanting and other horses to try and force her. It was a stallion, she could tell from the scent and she pressed herself further into the shielding copse of trees, knowing that spring was heavy in the year.

Thankfully she saw him pass by with her good eye and she was glad of that. She waited a long time before exiting that copse of trees. She decided to spend the night under and overhang of rock she found, it looked like a storm brewed. Cryumbling to the ground, she slept like a foal.

Soft winds blew from the direction of a storm, leaves its kindling as it swept across vast plains before they had arrived to the rippling waters of the river. Banks of rocks and sand welled at the top of the large roots of trees that one could grow so fond of as the times went on. Unlike the roots, sometimes the living were not so sure what their next move would be. They didn't know always whether the winds ahead blew harshly or gently, and certainly not could they knew whether the sun was gentle or bright and burning before they had arrived. It was different for them all, yet they all breathed the same breath and tasted the same clear, crystalline waters on their tongues. And with that water did they speak, yet all words were different with only a few having the same meaning as others.

Softly, pillars and cream daggers mucked through the red dirt that laid of the rocky banks of the river. Certainly, a great rain had plagued the area just weeks ago, perhaps less, ah, but it was the nature of spring. This would be his fourth, and perhaps one of his most important, as this was the first year he had ventured into what was unknown, not as a follower but a seeker. Soft eyes peered around, as if to say 'hello?' to who ever might be watching them.

Balin felt his entire form tense as he heard a crashing sound in the forest nearby. Perhaps, it was Frenzy trying to claim another mare...or someone could be hurt and need help up - the elderly these days sometimes struggled with walking about in an area of bushes, thorns, and logs. Swiftly, he moved toward the sound, sensing that it was not of the elderly, but the whimpering came from someone more his age. Quietly, he approached, sniffing the trail that smelled of mare and fright to a small clearing where she laid simply on the earth. It was like the earth and her were one as she struggled to stay hidden. "Hi?" he asked softly, copper pelt shining in the daylight over his pinto splattered pelt.

Long pillars circled her and watched her easily, a bit nervously as she looked as if she would start shaking. She was asleep though, but he didn't find that out until after he uttered his first words. "Are you ok?" he asked softly, waking her slowly by putting his muzzle next to her and moving his head towards her. "I am Balin, and I will not hurt you..." he said softly, as it was not every day he saw such a beauty just laying on the ground.

She slept uneasily, and jumped as soon as another horse touched her. Immediately frightened, she leapt to her feet and darted out of his reach very much terrified that another stallion had spotted her. She backed up against the wall of the overhang before speaking.

Terror showed in her voice. "Who are you?"

Balin was a gentle soul, much like his mother before him. Of course, father had not always been the gentle soul that the sparkling copper stag was now, but he knew that his father's lungs breathed kindness with the last breath he breathed. Light as a feather, he skittishly jumped back as she rose to her feet so quickly. More quickly than anyone he had ever seen! Easily, he chuckled to himself, for it had been many a moon since he had seen someone move that quickly.

"It's okay.." he whispered, voice soft and tender. "There's no need to run because I am no threat to you," he murmured, taking a step back to give her some space. Stretching his neck and skull down mighty and round he announced himself. "I am Balin, beta of Ciera. Who might you be...or if you prefer not to tell me, well that is your business. But I...mean no harm to you..regardless of what you might think," he said with a gentle sigh, just standing there. Making no advances.

The stag easily waited for her response, for she seemed quite interesting. And it had been quite a while since he had spoken to someone interesting.

Where the hell was she then? She wondered. The next question that came out though was one that would or might offend him. "Did my father send you to recapture me?" She did not take in the fact he was a beta, she was too afraid of him. She did not want to go back to that accursed place.

Her frightened posture did not change either. That was something she was not about to do.

Uneasily, he stepped back, sensing that she was more agitated than she seemed in deep slumber. The rise and fall of her slender sides had made her seem so peaceful and kind, radiant under the cascading sunshine that touched her lightly, even now. It would be a while before she actually believed him about his position and his personality, but he had all the time in the world, for youth and strength did not lead to perish. Suddenly, she spoke, her vocals jagged and shaken like a large oak uprooted from the ground it had called home for centuries in a simple instant.

"I don't know anything about you.." he said honestly, orbs slightly confused at the accusatory words she had spoken. Balin knew that she must be in much fear, for going somewhere one wanted not to go was fearsome. Many were beginning to walk about the trail of the forest, from young to old, meek to strong but his attention was focused on her - only her for the longest time until he sensed something just wasn't right.

A flash of ivory flashed through the wood behind them, and every muscle in his bodice tensed up as he looked around frantically. "I don't know your name...but step back.." he said quickly, jumping in front of her a pack of wolves suddenly surrounded them. Before them, was the most massive beast he had ever seen - the alpha - Crepusculum. Yes, she was there in all her glory to induct spies and slaves of Africa.

"Might I introduce myself...or perhaps not! But there is a colt that would love...this little mare here, and you will hand her over to us. Or, we could just kill you both?" she said, laughing evilly.

Balin got a nerve and beat her in the face with his front hooves and she staggered back a bit, coming at him with her claws and teeth bared. She bit into his shoulder, bringing him down to the ground. Blood leaked from his cut up shoulder but he rose again, taking out several of the weaker wolves with his larger daggers. One, he picked up, shaking it until it fell upon the ground, cold. "Leave her alone!" he shrieked at Crep, as she lunged at the mare, tearing at her belly. Quickly, he kicked Crep in the back leg and she limped for a moment, as it was obvious her leg was broken. If she had had Draighean with her, surely they would have been goners.

With one last effort, she ripped at his haunches when he wasn't looking, a patch of skin coming off of him easily. Balin was bloodied, but he looked back to the mare. "They wanted to take you as a slave," he murmured as more blood dripped onto his pink nostrils, flared from the work of defending her.

She did step back, watching as the wolves appeared, frightened, her ears going right back against the back of her skull. As the speaking one lunged at her, tearing into her belly, she reared screaming, hooves lashing out, but she missed unfortunately,

"They wanted me for what?" she was very frightened at the moment. He was strong indeed. But even he had been hurt. She shook her head. He was certainly brute enough to be one of the gaurd stallions from her old herd. She backed away a little.

Limping, he turned back to face her, blood dripping from his shoulder as he huffed with pain, skin twitching as he simply wished for it to stop stinging. It would be days before the pain subsided, though, he knew. Before addressing his own injuries, he turned to hers, sadness in his light orbs as he found that he didn't truly protect her from the dangers that had lurked. It was dangerous all around here, and it was his duty to make sure nothing happened to her now until she found a home of her own.

"They wanted you to be a slave. To do bad things for them and breed you to multiple stallions...and if you refused they would kill you," he said, as he knew that being honest was the best thing to do. "But I am not like them, and that is why I saved you from them. You can thank me later. But now, I need to make sure you are alright. Does it hurt badly?" he asked, looking down to the part where Crep had hurt her on the shoulder. There was no way to cure it but if it hurt too entirely badly, he supposed they would have to seek out a healer in the lands for her to go to.
